Smart Lock Installation

A smart lock lets you open the door with a phone, code, fingerprint or remote control. This guide explains what to check before buying and how installation works.

1. Before Buying — Check Compatibility

A cylinder lock is required — smart locks only work with a euro cylinder (PZ cylinder). A door with a lever tumbler lock is not compatible.

  • Measure the cylinder protrusion: how many mm the cylinder protrudes from the door surface (usually 5–10 mm)
  • Check the PZ distance: the standard is 72 mm, some doors have 92 mm
  • Check the backset: 35, 50 or 65 mm

2. Smart Lock Types

  • Cylinder replacement — replaces the entire cylinder. Easiest to install, but does not work without power (requires batteries).
  • Internal adapter — attaches over the cylinder from inside. Minimal change to external appearance.
  • Full replacement lock — replaces the entire lock system. Most secure, but more expensive to install.

3. Installation Steps (cylinder replacement)

1

Remove the old cylinder

Open the door, locate the cylinder fixing screw on the side (usually 1 M5 screw). Pull the cylinder out.

2

Check compatibility

Place the smart lock in the cylinder position — make sure it fits. Most devices have an adjustable spindle.

3

Secure the smart lock

Insert the smart lock into the hole and tighten the fixing screw. Do not overtighten.

4

Install batteries

Most smart locks run on AA or CR2 batteries. Charge the batteries before setup.

5

Set up the app

Download the manufacturer's app, create an account and connect the lock via Bluetooth/Wi-Fi.

6

Test the lock

Test opening with the app, code and (if applicable) fingerprint. Also test with the mechanical key.

4. Important Safety Tips

  • ✅ Always keep a mechanical backup key — batteries run out
  • ✅ Use a strong PIN code (at least 6 digits)
  • ✅ Update firmware regularly
  • ⚠️ Do not use a smart lock outdoors without an additional protective cover — cold affects batteries
  • ⚠️ Check that the smart lock is certified (CE + lock class)

5. Install Yourself or Call a Locksmith?

Cylinder replacement is DIY-friendly in most cases — 15–30 minutes, no special tools required. For a full lock replacement, we recommend calling a locksmith — incorrect installation can void the warranty.
