Cylinder Locks vs Lever Tumbler Locks

The two most common lock types in Estonia — cylinder lock and lever tumbler lock. Which one to choose? Here is an honest comparison.

Cylinder Lock

Today's standard. The lock consists of a body and a replaceable cylinder. The cylinder sits in the centre of the door and can be replaced separately without replacing the whole lock.

✅ Pros

  • Cylinder replaceable separately (cheaper)
  • Wide range of security levels (class 1–6)
  • Many manufacturers, large selection
  • Compatible with smart locks
  • Easier key duplication control

❌ Cons

  • Cheap cylinders more vulnerable (snap attack)
  • Requires snap-attack protection for high security
  • Poor variants break quickly

Lever Tumbler Lock

An older and more classical system. Common in buildings constructed before the 1990s. The mechanism is different — uses a so-called bit key. Very durable when properly maintained.

✅ Pros

  • Very durable mechanism
  • Not vulnerable to snap attack
  • Suits older doors
  • Simple design, long-lasting

❌ Cons

  • Full lock replacement is more complex
  • Smaller selection of modern products
  • Key duplicates harder to make
  • Not compatible with smart locks

Which to choose?

  • New apartment door / house → cylinder lock class 3–4. Standard and functional.
  • Old renovated door → depends on the door construction. Often a cylinder lock fits.
  • Want a smart lock → only a cylinder lock is compatible (not compatible with lever tumbler).
  • Existing lever tumbler works well → no need to replace, just have it adjusted.
