Why some locks are more difficult to open even for a professional locksmith

The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Arthur. He had lost the key to the front door and expected the locksmith to solve the problem in a few minutes. But after the inspection, the specialist explained that the installed mechanism belongs to a more complex system.

Arthur was surprised:

“Aren’t all locks about the same to a locksmith?”

No. The design of the lock directly affects the complexity of the work. In the material provided, disk and multi-lever mechanisms are given as examples of complex systems, where the number and arrangement of internal elements make the work much more demanding of qualifications.

Why is one lock easier to open than another?

Difficulty may be affected by:

  • operating principle;
  • number of internal elements;
  • availability of additional protective functions;
  • condition of the mechanism;
  • presence of a protective pad;
  • door design;
  • position of the crossbars.

Therefore, visually similar doors may require completely different approaches.

Does difficulty mean that the lock will have to be broken?

No. A complex mechanism and a devastating discovery are not the same thing. But a specialist may need:

  • more time;
  • more accurate diagnosis;
  • specialized equipment;
  • experience with this particular system.

Therefore, the promise of “any lock in five minutes” is not in itself a sign of professionalism.

Why is it difficult to tell the exact time in advance?

The client usually asks:

“How long will it take to open?”

But before the inspection the following are unknown:

  • exact model;
  • condition of the mechanism;
  • nature of the malfunction;
  • whether independent attempts have already been made;
  • Is the lock inside damaged?

Sometimes the usual mechanism becomes very jammed. Sometimes, on the contrary, a complex system is in a state that allows it to solve the problem quite accurately.

Good protection also requires maintenance

The better and more complex the system, the more important it is to ensure that:

  • the key was not damaged;
  • the door has been adjusted correctly;
  • the mechanism did not work under constant load;
  • service was carried out on time.

Even a good lock can fail due to improper use.

Our task is not to divide locks into “unpickable” and “bad”. There are no absolute solutions. Different systems simply have different design complexity and require different levels of training for maintenance and emergency opening.
