Why you can’t consider any new sound in the lock a trifle

The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Andrey. For several years his lock worked the same way. One day, when turning the key, a new metallic click appeared. A few days later a slight crunch was added to it.
The door was still opening, so Andrei decided:
“If it works, then everything is fine.”
But a mechanical lock usually doesn't start sounding different for no reason.
What a change in sound could mean
This is not necessarily a serious breakdown. But possible:
- wear of internal parts;
- operation of the mechanism under load;
- pollution;
- spring problem;
- changing the position of the door;
- damage to one of the elements.
The sound itself does not allow us to accurately determine the cause. But it shows that the nature of work has changed.
Why is it important to compare work with an open and closed door
If a crunching or clicking sound occurs only when the door is closed, the cause may be the interaction of the crossbars with the counterpart. If the sound persists even when the door is open, the mechanism itself requires more attention.
Do I need to change the lock right away?
No. First it's worth:
- make a short video;
- check the spare key;
- note at what moment the sound appears;
- pay attention to whether it has become harder to turn the key.
Why it's better not to wait for complete failure
If the sound is accompanied by an increase in resistance, this is a more significant symptom. While the door is opening, diagnosis is much easier than after it is completely jammed.
