The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Igor. His key stopped turning normally in the lock. At first, Igor tried to solve the problem on his own. He applied more force several times, tried to move the key, and then used a tool at hand.

When nothing worked, he called a repairman. During the conversation, I only wanted to say:

“The lock just stopped opening.”

But it is very important for a specialist to know what happened before his arrival. The material provided about typical mistakes when working with locks specifically notes that excessive force and improper impact can further jam or damage the mechanism.

Why previous actions matter

After independent attempts, the condition of the lock may differ from the original one. For example:

  • the key may have been slightly deformed;
  • the internal element may have moved;
  • the fragment could be inside;
  • the cylinder could start working differently;
  • the mechanism could have completely jammed.

Therefore, the master must understand not only the original problem, but also everything that happened after its occurrence.

Should you be embarrassed to talk about it?

No. This is a common situation. When a person cannot get home, the first reaction is to try to solve the problem on their own. For the master, this is not a reason to criticize the client.

This is diagnostic information.

What exactly is worth telling

Briefly enough to describe:

  • whether the key was turned with force;
  • whether a different key was used;
  • did you try to insert anything into the mechanism;
  • whether lubricant was used;
  • did you try to disassemble the fittings;
  • did the lock's behavior change after this?

Why this can save time

If the specialist knows that the mechanism has already been tampered with, he will not assume that the lock is in its original condition. This helps avoid misdiagnosis.

Trying on your own does not make the situation hopeless. But there is no point in hiding it from a specialist - the entire sequence of events is important for diagnosis.
