The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Roman. In the evening he inserted the key into the lock and noticed an unusual thing. The key turned easier than usual. It's almost too easy.
But the door didn't open. Roman tried again. The key rotated, but the usual movement of the mechanism was not felt.
“Previously, the key turned with normal resistance. Now it’s spinning, but nothing’s happening.”
This is a different type of malfunction.
What does free rotation of the key mean?
When the key turns but does not operate the lock, the problem may be in the transmission of movement between:
- key;
- cylinder;
- internal mechanism;
- lock drive.
The reasons depend on the design. Possible:
- damage to the cylinder element;
- wear of the transmission mechanism;
- damage to internal parts;
- violation of the connection between the cylinder and the lock body;
- damage to the lock itself.
The client's experience is often described as: “the key turns in vain.”
Should I keep turning the key?
If the nature of the job has changed dramatically, repeated attempts rarely help. They can further damage an already broken element. If the key rotates significantly more freely than before, it is better to stop experimenting and determine the cause.
Could the key itself be to blame?
Sometimes a damaged key does affect performance. But if the key fits into the cylinder normally and rotates freely, but the lock does not respond at all, the problem is often deeper.
It is useful to try a spare original key. If the situation repeats itself completely, the likelihood of a mechanism malfunction increases.
What will the master do?
First you need to understand what kind of system is installed. Next, the specialist evaluates:
- is the cylinder working;
- is rotation transmitted inside the lock;
- is the mechanism in its normal position;
- is it possible to open the door without destroying the main elements.
After opening, it becomes clear what exactly needs to be replaced.
Do I need to replace the entire lock at once?
No. Sometimes the fault relates only to the cylinder or an individual element. In other cases, the lock body itself is damaged. That is why the right decision is made after diagnosis.
