The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Ilya. After losing one set of keys, he replaced the cylinder. The new mechanism worked fine, and the master handed over a new set. But Ilya put the old keys in the same box.

A few days later, a relative accidentally took one of the old keys and decided that the new lock was faulty. The situation is simple, but very typical.

Why is it important not to mix keys after replacement?

If the cylinder is replaced, the old keys no longer match the new combination. Therefore, it’s better to immediately:

  • separate the old set;
  • sign a new one;
  • transfer current keys to all users;
  • remove old copies from everyday use.

Why is this especially important in the family or office

If several people use the door, confusion arises much more easily. One person knows that the cylinder has been replaced. The other one doesn't. As a result, someone starts:

  • insert the wrong key several times;
  • apply force;
  • consider the mechanism to be faulty.

Do I need to store old keys?

If they are not used anywhere else, there is usually little practical value. But before recycling, you need to make sure that the same key is not used for:

  • another door;
  • pantry;
  • garage;
  • common area.

What to do after replacement

Nice simple diagram: new cylinder → new set → immediately distribute current keys. In the material provided, replacing the cylinder is considered as a separate solution in case of serious wear or the need to update the mechanism, and after installation it is important to check the operation.

Sometimes the problem after replacement is not with the lock, but simply with someone continuing to use the old key.
