Let's call the client Olga. The lock stopped working properly. She watched several videos and decided:
“There are only a few screws there. Why pay for work?
Sometimes there really are simple operations that the owner can perform on his own. But the problem is different: it is not always clear in advance whether the task is really simple.
Why the cost of work is not just time with a screwdriver
The specialist pays not only for the tool. The work uses:
- diagnostic experience;
- knowledge of different designs;
- understanding of parts compatibility;
- the ability to notice the problem of the door, and not just the lock.
Sometimes a craftsman actually uses one tool. But this does not mean that it will be as easy for a person without experience to determine the correct action.
How self-employment becomes more expensive
For example: 1. initially only the cylinder is faulty; 2. the owner takes apart more parts than required; 3. the mechanism is assembled incorrectly; 4. the door closes; 5. Now emergency access recovery is also required.
That is, an attempt to save money creates new work.
When working independently makes sense
If:
- the operation is provided for in the manufacturer’s instructions;
- the door is open;
- you know exactly the model and size of the part;
- no intervention in the lock body is required.
For example, some standard service operations are really not complex.
When is the best time to stop?
If:
- the mechanism is already jammed;
- you do not understand the reason;
- after disassembly, extra parts appeared;
- the lock behaves differently than before the repair.
