The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Andrey. For several weeks he noticed a strange thing: after closing the door, the key sometimes did not want to come out of the cylinder normally.
At first it was enough to move it a little. Then I had to turn the key back a few degrees. After some time, Andrey noticed that sometimes you have to literally look for the key in a certain position in order to get it out of the lock.
The lock still opened the door. So the problem seemed minor.
“Since the door opens, maybe the key is just a little worn?”
This is indeed possible. But the problem may also be in the cylinder or mechanism itself.
Why should the key go in and out normally?
A good lock is designed to perform repeatably. If the key is free before:
- entered;
- turned;
- returned to its original position;
- extracted
but now the nature of the work has changed, this is already a symptom. The reason may be: *beginning of internal failure.
- key wear;
- wear of cylinder elements;
- pollution;
- damage to the mechanism;
- incorrect position of the cylinder;
- load from the door mechanism;
It is not always possible to determine the reason from a photograph, but the change in the behavior of the lock itself deserves attention.
Why you can't constantly pull the key by force
If the mechanism already holds the key tighter than usual, the constant application of force may cause it to become deformed. In the worst case, the key may break directly inside the cylinder.
Then the need to remove the fragment is added to the initial malfunction. You need to be especially careful when handling old or already noticeably worn keys.
Should you use lube?
Not just any one. Regular household lubricant is not always suitable for a particular type of cylinder and can collect contaminants over time. If the cause of the malfunction is unknown, it is better to first determine the type of mechanism and use only the appropriate remedy.
Pouring large amounts of oil inside the lock yourself may not eliminate the root cause.
What if a spare key works better?
This is useful information. If a new or rarely used spare key performs significantly better than the main key, the main key may already be worn out. If both keys behave the same, more attention should be paid to the lock itself.
When is it better to contact a specialist
The best moment for diagnosis is while the door is still opening normally. When the lock completely jams, the situation will automatically become an emergency.
