The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Raivo. He noticed that when he inserted the key, the cylinder moved slightly with him. At first the movement was barely noticeable. Later it became possible to slightly rock the cylinder with your fingers.
The lock continued to work. A question has arisen:
“If the door opens normally, maybe it’s just a loose screw?”
Sometimes the reason is really quite simple. But free movement of the cylinder should not be considered a normal state.
Why the cylinder should not move noticeably
When installed correctly, the cylinder is fixed in the door and works as part of a single structure. Slight play of individual elements may depend on the model, but significant movement of the entire cylinder requires inspection.
The reasons may be:
- weakening of fasteners;
- incorrect installation;
- damage to the fastening element;
- wear of fittings;
- incompatibility of sizes;
- damage to the cylinder itself or surrounding parts.
Why this is important not only for convenience
The cylinder is directly involved in transmitting movement to the lock. If it is installed unstable, it may affect:
- key position;
- drive operation;
- reliability of fixation;
- system durability.
In addition, the protective fittings must also be correctly installed in relation to the cylinder.
Is it possible to just tighten the screw?
Sometimes that's really enough. But first it is important to make sure that the problem is in the fastening. If the cylinder is installed the wrong size or is damaged, a simple tightening will not correct the underlying cause.
What is better to photograph
Useful for preliminary assessment:
- cylinder outside;
- cylinder from the inside;
- end of an open door;
- protective pad;
- position of the cylinder relative to the door surface.
Even better is a short video that shows the backlash.
