The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Anton. He needed help with an unusual access system. My first thought was:

“If a person deals with locks, then he knows how to work with all locks.”

But the scope is much broader. The training material provided explicitly lists the various areas - door mechanisms, safes and automotive systems - and emphasizes that skill increases with practice on increasingly complex mechanisms.

Why specialization matters

Working with:

  • apartment door;
  • by car;
  • safe;
  • electronic lock

may require completely different knowledge.

Why the professional answer sometimes sounds like “that’s not my area of expertise”

And that's okay. It is much better if the master honestly says:

“I don’t work with such a system.”

than begins to experiment with an unfamiliar client mechanism.

What to ask before leaving

If the system is non-standard, please inform:

  • brand;
  • model;
  • object;
  • nature of the malfunction.

For example: electronic lock of a certain manufacturer much more informative than: "the door does not open."

Why photos are useful again

From the photograph, a specialist can tell in advance whether such a mechanism belongs to his working practice.

Professionalism includes not only the ability to perform a job, but also an understanding of the boundaries of one’s own specialization.
