Why, after losing a key, sometimes it is enough to replace the cylinder, and not the entire lock

The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Dmitry. He lost the key to the apartment and immediately assumed the worst:
“We'll have to change the whole lock.”
After inspection, it turned out that the door system itself was working, and the question only concerned access control. In such situations, the solution is sometimes much simpler.
What exactly determines whether the old key will work
In a cylinder system, the key interacts primarily with the cylinder. If you replace it with a new mechanism with a different set of keys, the old keys will no longer open the door.
However, the following may remain the same:
- lock body;
- handles;
- door;
- response part;
- part of the fittings.
This is especially convenient if the rest of the mechanism is in good condition.
When a complete replacement may not be necessary
For example, if:
- the lock works properly;
- the only problem is the lost key;
- the owner wants to terminate the old copies;
- standard replaceable cylinder installed.
In the material provided about lost keys, changing the lock is considered precisely as one of the options for restoring security when there is a risk of access with a lost key.
Why an inspection is needed first
Not all locks are cylinder locks. In addition, even with a cylinder system, the following must be taken into account:
- size;
- cylinder type;
- fittings;
- door features.
Therefore, you should not buy a random cylinder just because it looks similar.
When the whole lock may still require attention
If simultaneously detected:
- serious wear;
- internal malfunction;
- damage to the body;
- problems with crossbars;
- unsuitable old design.
Then replacing only the cylinder will not solve all the issues.
