The name and certain circumstances have been changed.

Let's call the client Elena. After school, her child discovered that the set of keys was no longer there. An ordinary loss in itself is already unpleasant, but there was an additional problem: on the bundle there was a small keychain with an address.

Now two things potentially existed simultaneously: key to the apartment and information about where this apartment is located. This is what made Elena think about replacing the lock.

How serious is this?

It is important to separate the two situations. If just a key is lost without any identification, the person who finds it on the street usually does not know which door it opens.

But if along with the key there are:

  • address;
  • apartment number;
  • documents;
  • pass;
  • name tag;
  • school card with address;

It becomes much easier to associate a key with a specific object. This is a different category of risk.

Do I need to replace the entire door lock at once?

In most cases, you first need to define the design. If a cylinder lock is installed, replacing the cylinder is often sufficient. After installing a new cylinder, the lost key no longer fits.

This allows you to quickly regain access control without replacing the entire door and often without replacing the lock body.

What if the key is found later?

This is also quite possible. It may turn out to be:

  • at school;
  • in a sports bag;
  • with friends;
  • on the bus;
  • at home under furniture.

Therefore, the decision depends on the circumstances. If an address cannot be associated with a key and there is a high probability of quickly finding a key, some owners prefer to look for it first.

But if the address is clearly indicated on the keys, many decide to change access immediately.

What not to do in the future

It is useful not to place directly on the bundle:

  • full home address;
  • apartment number;
  • door number;
  • last name along with address.

If you want to return lost keys to the owner, it is better to use a contact number or another method of communication that does not show which door the key opens.

We don't want to turn the usual loss of a key into a cause for panic. Keys are lost all the time, and most often nothing unpleasant happens after that. However, if a key can be directly associated with a specific address, the owner must understand the technical options available to regain control of access.
