Why a technician may recommend adjusting the door first rather than changing the lock

The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Arthur. He made a simple complaint:
“The lock is hard to close.”
Arthur was sure that the mechanism was worn out and needed to be replaced. But when the door was open, the key turned easily. The problem only appeared after the door went into the frame.
This is an important diagnostic sign.
What happens when skewed
The lock bolts must fit exactly into the counter holes. If the door has moved slightly, they may:
- rest;
- rub;
- enter at an angle.
Then the user feels resistance precisely on the key. But the lock itself may be serviceable.
What signs indicate adjustment
For example: *problem depends on temperature.
- when the door is open, the lock works easily;
- when closed - hard;
- the door has to be pressed;
- you need to lift it slightly;
Why replacing the lock may not solve anything
If the cause is in the door position, the new mechanism will be under the same load. After some time, the problem may recur. Therefore, it is important to first identify the source of resistance.
What may be required
Depending on the situation:
- adjustment of loops;
- correction of the response part;
- checking the door position;
- setting up fittings.
And only if the mechanism itself is also damaged, the question of its repair or replacement arises.
