What types of door locks are there and why it is useful for the owner to know at least their type

The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Robert. During the call, the master asked:

“What kind of lock do you have?”

Robert replied:

“Regular metal.”

But this is not enough for a specialist. There are different mechanical and electronic systems, and their design affects:

  • selection of parts;
  • service;
  • diagnostics;
  • cost of repairs;
  • the ability to replace only a single element.

Cylinder systems

One of the most common options. They have a separate cylinder mechanism that the key operates. The practical advantage for the owner is that in many designs, if necessary, it is the cylinder that can be replaced without changing the entire lock body.

This is convenient, for example, after losing your keys.

Level locks

They use a different principle of mechanical interaction between the key and internal elements. Usually such a key is easy to recognize by its characteristic shape.

The main thing for the owner is to understand: the cylinder from a conventional cylinder lock is simply not installed here instead of the mechanism. That is, the options for repair and change of access are different.

Multipoint systems

Such doors can be locked at several points simultaneously. The problem with such a system is sometimes related not only to the key mechanism, but also to:

  • with door position;
  • drive;
  • other locking elements.

Therefore, diagnostics of the entire door is especially important.

Electronic and smart locks

Can be used:

  • code;
  • map;
  • application;
  • biometric identification;
  • combination of electronic and mechanical system.

Here are some additional questions:

  • food;
  • settings;
  • software access;
  • standard backup input.

Why don't we keep the original classification literally

The original article contains overly simplistic statements about the security of certain types of locks and descriptions of how to bypass them. For client material, it is more important to explain something else: the type of design determines how to maintain it and what problem can generally be solved by replacing one part.

How to find out your lock type

You don't have to figure it out on your own. Send: *if possible, photo of the end of the open door.

  • photo of the door;
  • photo of the key;
  • photo of the key area;
The customer does not need to become a lock specialist. But understanding at least the type of system greatly simplifies the choice of repair, cylinder and further maintenance.
