I lost my bag, there were documents and keys to the apartment inside - what to do?
Let's call the client Maria. After a trip around the city, Maria discovered that her bag was missing. Inside were personal belongings, documents and a set…
The client's name and certain details of the story have been changed to maintain confidentiality. The situation is based on typical household calls.
Let's call the client Maria. After a trip around the city, Maria discovered that her bag was missing. Inside were personal belongings, documents and a set of keys to the apartment.
At first, the main problem seemed to be the loss of documents itself. But after a while another question appeared:
“If a person finds the bag, he will see my name and address - and at the same time he will have the keys to the apartment. What to do with the lock?
This is no longer just a lost key. In this case, the key can potentially be associated with a specific address.
Why is this situation different from normal key loss?
If a person finds one unknown key on the street, he usually does not understand which door this key opens. The situation is completely different if along with the key there are:
- ID card;
- documents with address;
- agreement or invoice with address;
- driver's documents;
- tag with apartment number;
- other data allowing to identify the owner.
In this case, the risk is determined not only by the key itself, but also by the information next to it.
Do I need to replace the entire lock?
Not necessarily. If the door has a cylinder mechanism, in some cases it is enough to replace only the cylinder. After replacement:
- old keys stop working;
- the owner receives a new set;
- the existing lock body can be left;
- the door does not require complete remodeling.
For other types of locks, the decision depends on the specific design.
Can I just wait a few days?
Each owner makes this decision independently. If the bag could have been forgotten in a specific place and it was already found by employees of a store, bus or cafe, the situation is the same.
If it is not known where exactly it was lost, but the documents allow us to establish the address, the level of uncertainty is higher. The question can be formulated simply: do you currently control all the keys that can open the door? If the answer is no, changing access becomes a logical option.
What to do first
If documents were lost along with the keys, it is reasonable to simultaneously block them or restore them through the relevant institutions. The door lock is worth a special mention.
To do this, it is usually enough for the master to send photographs:
- the door itself;
- lock;
- cylinder;
- end part of the door;
- the second key, if it is preserved.
