The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Ivan. On a frosty morning, the key entered the driver's door, but the mechanism practically did not turn. There was a lot of advice on the Internet:

  • warm with open fire;
  • use random liquids;
  • heat the lock with various devices.

Some of these methods can create additional risk.

First make sure that it is the lock that is frozen

There are two different situations: 1. The lock mechanism does not turn; 2. The door was frozen with a seal to the body. Treating one problem will not help the other.

Which is preferable

It is safest to use a vehicle-specific lock defroster in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Do not store it only inside a closed car - then it will be inaccessible at the right time.

Why you shouldn't use high heat

Excessive local heating can damage:

  • plastic elements;
  • paint and varnish coating;
  • seals.

An open fire near a car is a particularly bad idea.

Why you can't turn the key by force

If there really is ice inside, the effort may end:

  • bent key;
  • broken key;
  • damage to the cylinder.

If the problem repeats every winter

Not only defrosting is needed, but also checking:

  • state of the mechanism;
  • moisture ingress;
  • corrosion.
In winter, the main mistake is to turn a frozen mechanism into a broken one using excess force.
