How a cylinder lock works and why it can often not be completely replaced
Let's call the client Thomas. After losing the key, he was sure: But there was a cylinder system on the door.
The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Thomas. After losing the key, he was sure:
“You need to buy a whole new lock.”
But there was a cylinder system on the door.
What is a cylinder
This is a separate element of the locking system that recognizes a suitable key and transmits movement to the main mechanism. This is why it is often called a replacement cylinder.
What is the practical advantage
If:
- lost keys;
- the cylinder is worn out;
- I want to switch to another set of keys,
In many doors, only this part can be replaced. The main building of the lock remains.
Are all cylinders the same?
No. They differ: *additional features.
- size;
- design;
- key type;
- product class;
But common European form factors do make selection relatively convenient.
Why the number of “secret combinations” is not the only indicator
Actual operation also depends on:
- quality of materials;
- precision manufacturing;
- protecting the cylinder with fittings;
- correct installation.
The modular design allows you to solve many problems cheaper and easier than completely replacing the lock.
