The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Ian. The apartment was undergoing renovation. The door was removed, adjusted, and some of the fittings were changed. The lock itself was kept old because it worked well before the renovation.

After completing the work, Ian noticed that the key began to turn harder. Especially with the door closed. With the door open, the mechanism looked almost intact.

“The lock worked before. Did it really accidentally break just after the repair?”

It is quite possible that the lock itself is not the main cause at all.

Why the behavior of the lock may change after work

Even a small change in the door's position can change the interaction:

  • crossbars;
  • latches;
  • strike plate;
  • boxes;
  • the door leaf itself.

If the bolt previously fit freely into the hole, but after adjustment it begins to rest against the edge, the key will immediately feel heavier.

How to distinguish a lock from a door adjustment

Useful check: Open the door and carefully try to close and open the lock with the key. If the mechanism operates easily when the door is open, but hard when closed, it is very likely that the problem is related to the position of the door or its counterpart.

If the lock jams even when the door is open, the fault may be inside the mechanism.

Why can't we just develop it by force?

The constant application of increased force can, over time, damage the already working lock itself. That is, a small adjustment problem can gradually create a real mechanical failure.

Do I need to change the old lock

Not necessarily. Sometimes all you need is:

  • door adjustment;
  • correction of the response part;
  • checking loops;
  • correct positioning of the lock.
After repair, problems with the lock do not always mean that the old mechanism has suddenly failed. Sometimes it is the geometry of the door that changes.
