Zylinderschlösser gegen Buntbartschlösser

The two most common lock types in Estonia — cylinder lock and lever tumbler lock. Which one to choose? Here is an honest comparison.

Zylinderschloss

Today's standard. The lock consists of a body and a replaceable cylinder. The cylinder sits in the centre of the door and can be replaced separately without replacing the whole lock.

✅ Pros

  • Zylinder einzeln austauschbar (günstiger)
  • Große Auswahl an Sicherheitsstufen (Klasse 1–6)
  • Viele Hersteller, große Auswahl
  • Mit Smart Locks kompatibel
  • Einfachere Kontrolle der Schlüsselkopien

❌ Cons

  • Günstige Zylinder anfälliger (Kernziehen)
  • Benötigt Kernziehschutz für hohe Sicherheit
  • Schlechte Varianten gehen schnell kaputt

Buntbartschloss

An older and more classical system. Common in buildings constructed before the 1990s. The mechanism is different — uses a so-called bit key. Very durable when properly maintained.

✅ Pros

  • Sehr robuster Mechanismus
  • Nicht anfällig für Kernziehen
  • Passt zu älteren Türen
  • Einfacher Aufbau, langlebig

❌ Cons

  • Kompletter Schlosstausch ist aufwendiger
  • Geringere Auswahl an modernen Produkten
  • Nachschlüssel schwerer anzufertigen
  • Nicht mit Smart Locks kompatibel

Which to choose?

  • New apartment door / house → cylinder lock class 3–4. Standard and functional.
  • Old renovated door → depends on the door construction. Often a cylinder lock fits.
  • Want a smart lock → only a cylinder lock is compatible (not compatible with lever tumbler).
  • Existing lever tumbler works well → no need to replace, just have it adjusted.
