Let's call the client Lyudmila. One evening her key suddenly did not want to turn. After several quiet attempts and changing the position of the door, the mechanism worked again.

The next day everything was as usual. A question has arisen:

“Since it jammed once, does that mean now it’s necessary to change the entire lock?”

Not necessarily. One episode does not yet allow us to determine the exact cause.

Why the lock could temporarily work differently

The reason may not only be due to internal failure. For example:

  • the door was under load;
  • the key was not inserted completely;
  • the position of the door leaf has changed;
  • temporary resistance has arisen;
  • the key itself is worn.

Therefore, it is important to look at the recurrence of the symptom.

When the situation becomes more serious

If the problem starts to recur:

  • once a week;
  • then several times a week;
  • then almost every day,

This is already a sustainable change in work. Especially if the following appear simultaneously: *crunch;

  • hard turn;
  • the need to move the key;
  • the need to press the door;
  • Difficulty extracting the key.

Should I wait for complete failure?

Not either. There is a difference between: "replace immediately after one accidental episode" and “ignore the recurring fault completely.” A reasonable option is diagnostics.

What can be written down for the master

If the problem persists, it may be helpful to take a short video. Also note:

  • does this happen with both keys;
  • only with the door closed or also with the door open;
  • does the symptom depend on the weather;
  • whether you have to change the position of the door.

This data may be more important than the “lock sometimes jams” story itself.

The purpose of our blog is not to sell the client a new lock after every unusual key movement. It is important to notice symptoms and put them in context.
