Why a lock may work in the morning and jam in the evening on the same day

The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Raivo. In the morning the door opened completely normally. In the evening, the same key suddenly began to move heavily. After several attempts, the mechanism almost stopped turning.

A logical question arises:

“How could it break in a few hours?”

In fact, the problem could have been developing for a long time, but manifested itself abruptly. The source materials list common causes of failure as wear, contamination, key damage and corrosion - processes that usually accumulate gradually.

Why the rejection seems sudden

Internal wear can go unnoticed for a long time. The mechanism still works, but the margin of normal operation is getting smaller. Then there is an additional factor:

  • changing the position of the door;
  • temperature;
  • particle of pollution;
  • damaged key.

And the problem becomes sharply noticeable.

Does this necessarily mean serious damage?

No. Need to check:

  • second key;
  • work with the door open;
  • door position;
  • is there any external damage.

But if the mechanism hardly rotates anymore, there is no point in checking it by force.

Why it is important to remember previous symptoms

Sometimes the client first says:

“Everything was perfect until today.”

And then he remembers:

  • in recent weeks the key has sometimes stuck;
  • the second turn was harder;
  • the door had to be pressed harder.

Such details greatly change the picture.

Sudden failure does not always mean a sudden cause. Sometimes this is the final symptom of a gradually developing malfunction.
