Let's call the client Alexander. His entrance lock was already many years old. The mechanism worked, but several friends advised:
“It’s better to just replace the old lock.”
Alexander decided to first find out whether age itself is really a reason for replacement. No. But there are situations where replacement actually makes sense.
The source material lists typical causes as lost keys, mechanical failure, external influences, and the desire to change the security system.
Reason #1. You no longer control all the keys
For example:
- key lost;
- unknown number of copies;
- tenants have changed;
- the apartment was purchased from the previous owner.
Here the replacement may not be due to a breakdown, but to access control.
Reason #2. The mechanism is seriously worn out
Signs:
- regular jamming;
- unstable operation with different keys;
- strong backlash;
- repeated malfunctions.
If repairs have to be done over and over again, replacement may be more efficient.
Reason #3. The lock is damaged
After a serious mechanical impact, the serviceability of the key does not necessarily mean that the original characteristics of the system are preserved.
Reason #4. Owner's requirements have changed
For example, previously the door was used by one person. Now required: *Master Key;
- several users;
- controlled access;
- electronic control.
An old lock may be functional, but simply no longer up to the task.
How to properly replace
First: diagnostics. Then: selection of solution. Then: installation. And be sure to: checking work. This is the sequence that the material provided recommends.
