Let's call the client Martin. After replacing the cylinder, he noticed an unusual feature. If a key was left in the lock inside the apartment, the second key from outside either did not enter normally at all or could not open the door.

The old cylinder behaved differently. A question has arisen:

“Is the new lock faulty or is it a design feature?”

In some cylinders this behavior is indeed a feature of the mechanism.

Why can one key block the second

Not all cylinders support operation on both sides at the same time. In some designs, a key left inside physically prevents a second key on the outside from interacting normally with the mechanism.

Other cylinders have a special function that allows the door to be opened from the outside even with the key inserted inside.

Is this a malfunction?

Not necessarily. This may be a standard feature of a particular model. Therefore, it is worth considering the usage scenario before replacing the cylinder. For example, if people live at home:

  • older people;
  • children;
  • several family members;
  • people who often leave the key inside;

The function of opening from the outside with the key inserted can be particularly important.

Why this might be a problem

The person can leave the key inside, exit through another door, or slam the door. After this, a spare key from outside will not help. That is, technically both keys are functional, but the design itself does not allow them to be used simultaneously.

What can be done

It is necessary to determine the cylinder model and its function. If this feature is inconvenient, you can select a cylinder with suitable operating logic.

Many owners consider all cylinders to be the same. In practice the functions may differ. The right choice depends not only on the size, but also on how exactly people use the door every day.
