The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Paul. The lock worked. The door was opening. The key was turning. But one day Pavel noticed a new sound. First a slight click. A few days later there was a slight crunch when turning the key.

“Everything is opening up. Maybe it’s just a sound and nothing serious?”

Sometimes the sound is actually related to the normal operation of the mechanism. But if the character of the sound has changed, this may be a sign of changes in the operation of internal parts.

Why is the new sound important?

A working mechanism usually works relatively the same. If before the lock opened quietly, but now the following appeared: *crunch;

  • metallic click;
  • grinding;
  • intermittent movement;
  • sharp blow inside the body,

this may indicate:

  • wear;
  • spring damage;
  • dry work of parts;
  • pollution;
  • skew;
  • increased load.

Do I need to change the lock urgently?

Not necessarily. It is first important to understand whether the symptom is recurring. If the sound occurs once, it may not mean anything. If it appears constantly and becomes stronger, it is better to carry out a diagnosis.

Should I put oil inside?

Not any lubricant and not any lock. An unsuitable product may collect dust and impair the operation of the mechanism. It is better to first determine the type of lock and the reason.

What is useful to record on video

If possible, remove:

  • sound when turning the key;
  • lock operation when the door is open;
  • work with the door closed;
  • handle position;
  • movement of crossbars.

This gives the master much more information than just the phrase “the lock sounds strange.”

Not every click means a problem. But if the sound has changed simultaneously with the deterioration of the key or door, this is already a useful diagnostic signal.
