Let's call the client Irina. She noticed that the key had become harder to turn lately. Sometimes I had to reinsert it several times. A question has arisen:

“Does the entire lock need to be replaced or can the cylinder be repaired?”

Often the problem may actually be in the cylinder. In the material provided, the causes of cylinder failure include contamination, wear of internal parts, key damage, corrosion and mechanical damage.

When renovation might still make sense

If there is a malfunction: *appeared recently;

  • small;
  • not associated with serious damage;
  • the cylinder itself is in good condition.

After diagnosis, it may turn out that a complete replacement is not required.

When replacement makes more sense

For example:

  • the mechanism is very worn;
  • damaged inside;
  • has traces of serious external influence;
  • regularly jams;
  • has already been repaired several times.

The source material also recommends considering replacement if there is severe wear, damage due to key jamming, and significant signs of mechanical stress.

Do I need to change the entire lock along with the cylinder?

Usually not if:

  • the lock body is in good condition;
  • the problem is really localized in the cylinder;
  • design allows separate replacement.

This is one of the advantages of the modular cylinder system.

Why you can’t buy a cylinder based on appearance alone

Meaning:

  • length;
  • aspect ratios;
  • type;
  • fittings;
  • position in the door.

An incorrectly sized cylinder may not be installed correctly even if the type is fully compatible.

“The key is stuck” is not the same as “the whole door and the whole lock need to be replaced.” Very often the problem can be localized much more accurately.
