Let's call the client Sergei. He decided to replace the cylinder himself and discovered dozens of options:

“30/30, 30/40, 35/45 - what do these sizes even mean?”

Size is indeed one of the main parameters of choice.

Why the cylinder must match the thickness of the door

If it is too long, the outer part may protrude excessively. If it is too short, it will be inconvenient to use, and the fittings may not work properly.

What do the sizes mean?

For a cylinder, the distance from the central fastening element to each side is usually taken into account. For example, two sides may have different lengths. Therefore the total length is not enough.

Symmetrical or asymmetrical

It depends on:

  • thickness of the canvas;
  • external lining;
  • internal fittings;
  • door designs.

Why you can’t choose only by price

In addition to size, the following matters:

  • workmanship;
  • type of key system;
  • protection of the cylinder itself;
  • ability to control the production of copies;
  • terms of Use.

External fittings are very important

Even a good cylinder must be considered in conjunction with the security plate and lock design.

A suitable cylinder is not simply a mechanism that physically fits into a hole. It must fit the entire door correctly.
