How does a secure lock differ from just an expensive lock?

The client's name and certain details have been changed.
Let's call the client Mikhail. He was choosing a new lock for the front door and was quickly faced with dozens of promises:
- “maximum protection”;
- “premium level”;
- “professional series”;
- “unbreakable mechanism”.
After several hours of comparison, the question only became more difficult:
“What makes a lock truly secure anyway? Price? Brand? How many elements are there?
The materials provided contrast simpler and more complex systems and separately provide examples of disk and lever mechanisms of increased complexity. But for the door owner it is more useful to take a broader view.
One lock does not determine the security of the entire door
Even a high-quality mechanism works as part of a system. Meaning:
- the door itself;
- door frame;
- fastening;
- cylinder or lever mechanism;
- protective fittings;
- response elements;
- installation quality.
Therefore, installing an expensive element on a weak structure will not necessarily give the expected result.
Why a complex mechanism can be useful
A more complex design can increase resistance to certain types of impacts. But the term “complex” does not automatically mean “best for any object.” For example, requirements for:
- apartment;
- garage;
- pantry;
- office;
- technical room
will vary.
What is more important than a brand
Worth evaluating:
- origin of the product;
- class and purpose;
- installation quality;
- door compatible;
- availability of suitable protection;
- ability to control keys.
This last factor is especially important for properties where keys are regularly issued to other people.
Do I need to change a working old lock?
Not necessarily. If the mechanism:
- serviceable;
- approaches the door;
- meets the owner's requirements;
- properly protected,
age itself is not a sufficient argument for replacement.
When modernization makes sense
For example:
- after purchasing an apartment;
- with unknown key history;
- after door damage;
- when changing the purpose of the premises;
- when the existing system is inconvenient;
- if the fittings are installed incorrectly.
