The client's name has been changed.

Let's call the client Anton. Before a long trip, he began checking the apartment. I turned off the water, turned off unnecessary appliances, and asked a friend to check my email sometimes.

And suddenly I thought about the keys. Over the past few years, the spare kit has visited:

  • parents;
  • neighbor;
  • ex-girlfriend;
  • friend;
  • craftsmen during repairs.

Most of the keys, it seemed to him, had been returned. But he could no longer remember exactly.

“I'm going away for a few weeks and suddenly I realized that I don't even know exactly how many keys there are.”

Before this, the question practically did not bother him. But before the long absence, the feeling of uncertainty became much stronger.

Why do such thoughts arise more often before a trip?

While a person is at home every day, he feels in control of the situation. Before the vacation, the apartment remains without the permanent presence of the owner.

Therefore, attention naturally shifts to:

  • doors;
  • windows;
  • alarm;
  • keys;
  • access by third parties.

That's when the old story of spare keys starts to look different.

Do I need to change the lock before every vacation?

No. If the owner has precise control over the existing keys, no special action is required. But if over several years the key has been repeatedly transferred to other people and the history is no longer known, you can consider changing access.

Should we suspect everyone who was once given a key?

Absolutely not. Most spare keys are kept by family and friends for years without any problems. Again, we're talking about something else: can the owner today accurately determine which keys are valid and who has them? If not, upgrading the cylinder allows you to start the story over again.

Useful system for the future

You can create a simple account:

  • basic set;
  • spare set No. 1;
  • spare set No. 2;
  • to whom it was given;
  • when returned.

For homes, offices and multiple sites, this becomes especially useful. You may also consider controlled key generation or Master Key systems if more complex access control is required.

The goal is not to make people nervous about going on vacation. Before a long absence, owners are simply more likely to notice issues that were put off in everyday life. Key control is one such issue.
