The client's name has been changed.
Let's call the client Ksenia. She bought an apartment and almost immediately began moving. Over the course of several weeks, the keys were used by different people:
- repairmen;
- furniture assemblers;
- kitchen installers;
- movers;
- designer;
- relatives.
Sometimes the kit was left directly at the site, so as not to come in person each time. After the work was completed, all known keys returned to Ksenia. But after the move, a question arose:
“I now live here permanently, and the key has been passed around between different people for several weeks. Does it make sense to change access?
It's not a question of mistrust
During renovations or relocations, such access arrangements are absolutely common. The problem lies elsewhere. The more people temporarily use one set of keys, the more difficult it is for the owner to control the entire access history.
The key could:
- transferred within the brigade;
- stored on site;
- stay with the work manager;
- used by several specialists throughout the day.
What can be done after finishing the work
One option is to treat the repair period as a temporary access phase. Once completed, a permanent cylinder is installed with a new set of keys. Thus: repair period keys cease to matter.
Do I need to replace the entire lock?
Usually not. If the existing system is working properly, it may be enough to change the cylinder or other element responsible for the key combination.
This can be planned in advance
For future repairs there is an even more convenient scheme: 1. install a temporary cylinder; 2. give his keys to the workers; 3. after completion of the repair, replace it with a permanent one; 4. Permanent keys should not be handed over to contractors at all.
This is how the owner initially separates temporary and permanent access.
