Zamki bębenkowe a zamki zapadkowe

The two most common lock types in Estonia — cylinder lock and lever tumbler lock. Which one to choose? Here is an honest comparison.

Zamek bębenkowy

Today's standard. The lock consists of a body and a replaceable cylinder. The cylinder sits in the centre of the door and can be replaced separately without replacing the whole lock.

✅ Pros

  • Wkładkę można wymienić osobno (taniej)
  • Szeroki zakres klas zabezpieczenia (1–6)
  • Wielu producentów, duży wybór
  • Zgodny z zamkami elektronicznymi
  • Łatwiejsza kontrola dorabiania kluczy

❌ Cons

  • Tanie wkładki są podatne na wyłamanie
  • Wymaga zabezpieczenia przed wyłamaniem
  • Słabe modele szybko się psują

Zamek zapadkowy

An older and more classical system. Common in buildings constructed before the 1990s. The mechanism is different — uses a so-called bit key. Very durable when properly maintained.

✅ Pros

  • Bardzo trwały mechanizm
  • Odporny na wyłamanie
  • Pasuje do starszych drzwi
  • Prosta budowa, długa żywotność

❌ Cons

  • Wymiana całego zamka jest trudniejsza
  • Mniejszy wybór nowoczesnych produktów
  • Trudniej dorobić klucze
  • Niezgodny z zamkami elektronicznymi

Which to choose?

  • New apartment door / house → cylinder lock class 3–4. Standard and functional.
  • Old renovated door → depends on the door construction. Often a cylinder lock fits.
  • Want a smart lock → only a cylinder lock is compatible (not compatible with lever tumbler).
  • Existing lever tumbler works well → no need to replace, just have it adjusted.
