Serrures à cylindre ou à gorges

The two most common lock types in Estonia — cylinder lock and lever tumbler lock. Which one to choose? Here is an honest comparison.

Serrure à cylindre

Today's standard. The lock consists of a body and a replaceable cylinder. The cylinder sits in the centre of the door and can be replaced separately without replacing the whole lock.

✅ Pros

  • Cylindre remplaçable seul (moins cher)
  • Large gamme de niveaux de sécurité (classe 1–6)
  • Nombreux fabricants, large choix
  • Compatible avec les serrures connectées
  • Contrôle des doubles plus simple

❌ Cons

  • Cylindres bon marché plus vulnérables
  • Nécessite une protection anti-cassage
  • Les modèles bas de gamme cassent vite

Serrure à gorges

An older and more classical system. Common in buildings constructed before the 1990s. The mechanism is different — uses a so-called bit key. Very durable when properly maintained.

✅ Pros

  • Mécanisme très robuste
  • Non vulnérable au cassage
  • Convient aux portes anciennes
  • Conception simple, longue durée

❌ Cons

  • Le remplacement complet est plus complexe
  • Choix plus restreint de produits modernes
  • Doubles plus difficiles à réaliser
  • Incompatible avec les serrures connectées

Which to choose?

  • New apartment door / house → cylinder lock class 3–4. Standard and functional.
  • Old renovated door → depends on the door construction. Often a cylinder lock fits.
  • Want a smart lock → only a cylinder lock is compatible (not compatible with lever tumbler).
  • Existing lever tumbler works well → no need to replace, just have it adjusted.
