Comment choisir la bonne serrure ?

Choosing a door lock can seem complicated, but knowing a few basic concepts makes the process simple. In this guide we explain everything you need to know.

1. Lock Class — What Is It?

The lock class (1–6) shows how well a lock resists forced entry. Class 1 is minimal protection; class 6 is maximum (banks, archives).

  • Class 1–2 — suitable for interior doors, storage rooms
  • Class 3–4 — recommended for apartment and house entrance doors
  • Class 5–6 — for high-security environments

For most homes, class 3 or 4 is the best choice — good protection at a reasonable price.

2. Lock Type — Cylinder vs Lever Tumbler

Cylinder lock is the most common today. The cylinder sits in the centre of the door and is locked with a key. The advantage is easy cylinder replacement without replacing the whole lock.

Lever tumbler lock is an older type, often found in older buildings. Durable, but cylinder replacement is more complex.

3. Material

  • Stainless steel — best for exterior doors (weather-resistant)
  • Brass — classic look, suits most door types
  • Zinc-plated steel — economical choice for interior doors

4. Smart Lock — Worth Considering?

Smart locks allow you to open the door with a phone, code or fingerprint. Ideal if you often forget your keys.

5. Summary — Quick Checklist

  • ✅ For exterior doors, choose at least class 3
  • ✅ Cylinder lock is more versatile, replacement is cheaper
  • ✅ For exterior doors — stainless steel or brass
  • ✅ Ask a locksmith for advice — consultation is free
